How we perceive this world can nurture our Wellbeing needs.
One of the Five Ways to Wellbeing, according to NHS, is to 'Be mindful'. This is something I discuss with my clients - how they are ensuring their focus is on something pleasant as much as possible, by being aware of the present moment and to try to eliminate distractions which might avert them from their pursuit of calm. But I also advise them, this may be only part of what is needed to ensure our Wellbeing is at its peak. Sure, we can take responsibility for steering our eyes to the natural environment as the seasons change for example, or listen out for a bird singing, or share a meaningful, positive interaction with someone we love. But, as we run around in our busy lives, these interactions with our external world can be fleeting and the positive impact they bring short lived as interference jumps at us from every corner, devices, people, responsibilities. So how can we take more steps to achieve a consistent, deeper inner sense of Wellbeing?
The art of improving our Wellbeing is like growing a tree. It needs to be nourished, watered, and have light and air. To nourish - be absolutely mindful in your moments, your time is precious, and every experience should be like a leaf or a blossom thriving in the health of your tree. To water - feel, allow pure emotions to carry you completely and wash through you to bring authenticity to your experiences, like the sap in the tree rises and can spread to the extremities of your being. Shed light on your thoughts, illuminate a path of positivity, see a sparkle of sunshine in the dew on the leaves of your existence. And breathe. Let the trees help you to breathe. Whatever you look at, stop and pay attention and consider - how are you breathing?
Mindfulness, great, so you have grown your tree. But we can go further than this. What would it be like to become the tree? I don't mean simply imagining you are the tree; I mean having an experience that manifests a deeper and long-lasting understanding that you are not separate from the tree. The energy which grows the tree is the same energy that created you and carries you along in and out of every moment.

Mindfulness can bring this kind of all-encompassing thought to you sometimes, but I believe it is through the practice of regular meditation that we begin to connect more significantly to the world, others, animals and nature. What can bring us more closely to our utmost sense of wellbeing than the concept that we really are all one and can let go and know we are not lost or alone?
