Meditation = healing
Through meditation we can improve our ability to be sensitive to our mind, body and soul. We can identify our aspirations, dreams and drivers and choose a life of wellbeing and contentment. It is also with deep meditation that the body’s natural healing abilities can flourish.
Seven levels: Kundalini, Body tension release, Breathing Focus, Compassion, Mindfulness, Zen and Transcendental:
Kundalini Yoga meditation
This is an active, moving form of meditation that blends deep breathing and mantras. It is possible to teach yourself this meditation, but it is also taught in a class. It can tone various muscles and help with pain. It is supports psychologically by improving anxiety and depression. A 2008 study of veterans with back pain, found that kundalini yoga reduced pain, improved stamina and boosted positive mental health.
Kundalini meditation is part of Kundalini yoga and its purpose is to guide energy through the body. It is thought that energy in the root chakra at the base of the spine needs to be set free by rising through the the seven chakras of the body and released through the crown chakra over the head.
Releasing energy from the body this way is intended to create a system of communication between the mind and body to relieve mental, physical, and spiritual inbalances. This method of bringing focus to the body by connecting with your breath allows you to be aware and present, initiate new rhythm, and connect with the highest version of yourself. Kundalini meditation is a way to cleanse your mind, an energy shower to cleanse your aura. It's a way to rejuvenate and to manage anxiety in the moment. It helps to balance your energy and calm your mind so you become the master of the thoughts that you have.
This meditation technique I use when I have imbalance in my root chakra which I usually focus on on Mondays, which is also the day of the Moon.
Body Tension Release meditation
The first meditation I ever used was progressive relaxation, which encourages people to scan their bodies for areas of tension. During a progressive relaxation session, individuals start at the feet, and work up the whole body. A good method is to focus and tense and then relax muscles, and another method might be to support a person to imagine a wave, washing through their body to wash away tension. Progressive relaxation can help to promote generalized feelings of relaxation and sensuality and because of this I associate with the sacral chakra. I focus on the sacral chakra on Tuesdays and it is associated with the planet Mercury.
Breathing Focus meditation
Breath awareness is a type of mindful meditation that encourages mindful breathing. Practitioners breathe slowly and deeply, counting their breaths. The goal is to focus only on breathing and to ignore other thoughts that enter the mind. As a form of mindfulness meditation, breath awareness offers many of the same benefits as mindfulness. Those include reduced anxiety, improved concentration, and greater emotional flexibility.
This is my preferred method for meditation using circular breathing whilst playing my didgeridoo, with a mandala for additional focus. I have written about the experience of this here in the article Taoist Circular Breathing and Breathing with Chi. The Solar Plexus, which I focus on on Wednesdays, is associated with the planet Venus. This is the day I do the light work of sending out my distant healing at 10am and you can find out more here.
Compassionate, loving-kindness, Metta or Benevolence meditation carries intention to create an attitude of love and kindness towards everything, even a person's enemies and sources of stress.
With deep steady breathing, individualss open their minds to receiving love and kindness. They then send energy of compassion to the world, to specific people, or to friends and family.
In most forms of this meditation, the key is to repeat the message many times, until the practitioner feels an attitude of loving kindness. Compassionate meditation is designed to promote feelings of love and benevolence, both for others and the meditator. Thursday is heart chakra day and in the planetary structure it is associated with the sun.
Mindfulness is a form of meditation where the purpose is to remain focussed on the present moment. The past and future are not considered, rather the method is to use the senses to take in the experience of now, and this can be practiced anywhere. Living mindfully involves savouring experiences like the smell of a flower or sights and sounds around them.
Mindfulness reduces negative emotions, improve focus and memory, reduce impulsive, emotional reactions and improve relationships. There is evidence indicating mindfulness improves health. A study of African-American men with kidney disease found that mindfulness meditation could lower blood pressure. This is the meditation I link to throat chakra as I feel it supports communication in relationships and it is related to Friday and the planet Mars - on Fridays at 10am I send out empowerments to anyone who wants to receive them (document to explain this coming soon).
Zen meditation is a form of meditation that can be included in Buddhist practice. Some people praticing Zen meditation are guided by a teacher because this kind of meditation involves certain steps and postures.
The goal is to make oneself very comfortable, pay attention to breathing, and mindfully regard one's thoughts without judgment. This is similar to mindfulness meditation but requires more practice and control, and iit supports both relaxation and a new spiritual path. Zen is all about the third eye chakra, Saturday and the planet of Jupiter.
Transcendental Meditation is a spiritual form of meditation where practitioners remain seated and breathe slowly. The goal is to transcend or rise above the meditator's current state of being.
During a meditation session, there is a focus on a mantra or a repeated word or series of words. A mantra is worked out based on a set of factors, sometimes including the year the practitioner was born, and the year the teacher was trained, I have had it reported to me this works very well for some but I did not find it effective personally. People who practice Transcendental Meditation report both spiritual experiences and heightened mindfulness. Crown chakra on Sundays, with the sun, transcendence in the light. It is the day I spend time with crystals, because they, like us are also resonating energy and light.
Meditation can have many benefits with commitment. According to NCCIH "Research suggests that practicing meditation may reduce blood pressure, symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression, and insomnia." It is my firm belief that adding the tools of mandalas and crystals to your practice can further enhance the effectiveness of each session, please take a look at my article "Which Chakra is out of balance and what sort of Mandala do I need?" here. Take each day at a time with your meditation practice and you will find that soon the planets of your cosmos begin to align and your mind finds the secrets of celestial peace.
